Changed and Screenspired

In the ongoing saga of giving this site even more focus, it has undergone some major design and minor programming changes. The design was brought into line with the deus62.com domain, a process which isn't quite completed yet, and the programming changes focused on improving the comments page for each post which now works properly and sports Gravatars if a visitor signed up for one. On top of that, some categories were removed for now to focus on the ones available, and the recent posts block was removed from the archive and category pages.

Today and yesterday I noticed a flurry of activity in my referrers, fortunately not that of the spamming kind, as the comment form is still "wide open", but the visitors came streaming in from two other sites.

The first stream reached this site via publish.com which featured Adam Howell's article "What I Learned from CSS Reboot". This is what he wrote:

[...] With this fall's Reboot submissions, the first trend I noticed is that fixed-width, centered and drop-shadowed layouts with tiled backgrounds still reign supreme. There are plenty of creative tweaks on the old standard, such as deus62, ribic and andio.net, but its ubiquity remains. Maybe next year great looking fluid designs, such as The Watchmaker Project will take advantage of the entire screen. Maybe. [...]

I did leave a short comment on Howell's blog about this.

The second group of visitors was lead here by this site's appearance on Screenspire. Although I don't think my coding is worth of any praise - although I'm working on improving it - I was happy to see livingwithmusic.com displayed there as I often drop by there to simply have a look at designs. I like the fact that design and the showing off of full-page layouts is the sole purpose of the site, because some of the other CSS inspirational sites have lately been suffering a bit from discussions and personal insults marring site discussions.

On a last note: I also submitted livingwithmusic.com to the 9rules Network. I don't think I have much of a chance of being asked to join, but I do believe that they have a passionate audience that might also be into collecting music, hence also wondering where to put all the stuff.

On the upcoming list we have a post about that notorious online shop from Spain, Absolute Distribution, an introduction to All About Jazz (AAJ), and the second presentation of the CD and DVD storage systems I myself use. So, come by again tomorrow for the first one of these updates. See you then.

  • Very nice, sir!  And congrats on the Screenspire feature.

I have one suggestion for you - thought about making the nav in the left column fixed positioned?  I had set out to make something… anything, on my site fixed, but just couldn’t find a good use for it.  I think your nav would be perfect.

Also, nice touch adding the Subscribe to comments option.  I wish every blog/site that allowed comments had one of those.  I was super stoked when I found the WP plugin.

Good luck with 9rules round 3.  Fingers crossed for the both of us!  Not sure if you heard, but there was over 500 sites submitted for round 3!

  • Hi again, Matt. Well, I guess this is the acid test if the subscription actually works. ;)

I have to admit I don’t quite get what you mean. Why would making the left nav fixed make a difference? And what would it be good for? My brain’s clogged up by too many winegums at the moment. I’m a sucker for those dark Bassett’s ... the green ones I am in the process of peddling to neighbours.

I submitted my site simply because when I select music in their tag list, no music shows up? I think I might be able to add something, but they have pretty high standards there, so ... let’s see.

  • Yeah dude, the notification worked.

Sorry, I was referring to elements of the site that don’t move when you scroll - so your nav would always stay at the top of the left column. Similar to the right column on Fadtastic.

  • Oh, yes!

    Don’t give me ideas ... ;)

  • Awesome! I love this site. So simple and clean. Nice!
